Ghost of You

© Lindsey Hon Rubendall

Like a breath gently whispered on a frosty pane

Leaving a mark, a touch of your name

Though you may have not heard the subtle whisper

I know it was you

A footprint left in the sand

only to be faded without a trace

By the violent shores come to call

Still I feel your grace

Like the softest touch upon my cheek

‘tis without words to me you speak

A race through time

to the ends of the Earth

following the trails of your ghost

With an ache in the soul,

a lingering desire of the heart

Wounds from which I cannot part

Yet pushing me on, they do

to the memory that is you

A bond that is ne’er to be broken

About this poem

There is nothing more painful than love lost.

Loss comes in all forms – loved ones passed, torn relationships, friends that break away. The closer to the heart, the deeper the wound and amount of time it takes to pick up the pieces and forge forward.

Yet some wounds run too deep for the echoes of time to ever be able to compensate. These are the wounds that stem from the loss of a key relationship. You are forever longing for one more moment, one more laugh, hug – one moment to tell them how much they mean to you. The only place of solace for the loss of such a key relationship is in the canvas of your memories and imagination.

Those we love never truly leave, but forever have a home within our hearts and minds.
